Why I Moved from Registered Nurse to Holistic Nurse and Integrative Health Practitioner

People often ask me why I left conventional nursing to become a Holistic Nurse and Integrative Health Practitioner.

The answer is simple.

Because before I became the practitioner I am today, I became the patient.

After many years as a Registered Nurse, I realised that healthcare often focuses on managing symptoms rather than asking the most important question:

Why is this happening in the first place?

Painkillers for pain. Sleeping tablets for insomnia. Laxatives for constipation. Medication for anxiety. While these treatments certainly have their place and can be life-changing, I became increasingly interested in understanding what was driving these symptoms in the first place.

I wanted to help people discover the root causes of their ill health, rather than simply helping them cope with the consequences.

Then life gave me the greatest lesson of all.

A few years ago, I experienced one of the most traumatic periods of my life. Within a short space of time I lost my mother, my brother died unexpectedly, and my son experienced a life-threatening medical emergency, and our family went through an incredibly difficult time. Alongside other deeply stressful family events, the emotional weight of it all completely overwhelmed my nervous system.

Like so many people, I carried on.

I kept going because that's what nurses do. That's what mothers do.

Until one day my body simply couldn't.

I developed overwhelming exhaustion, postural hypotension that left me feeling dizzy whenever I stood up, episodes of vertigo, chronic insomnia, relentless constipation and a deep sense that my body had become stuck in survival mode.

Although every medical test suggested there was no single disease causing my symptoms, I knew something wasn't right.

That's when I immersed myself in functional medicine, nutritional therapy, amino acid therapy and the science of the nervous system.

I came to understand that prolonged stress can have widespread effects throughout the body. When our stress response remains switched on for too long, many normal processes can become disrupted. Sleep can suffer, digestion may slow, energy production can feel depleted, and the body can become less resilient. It can feel as though every system is struggling to keep up.

Instead of masking my symptoms, I began supporting my body from the inside out.

Through personalised amino acid therapy, targeted nutrition, carefully selected supplements, nervous system regulation, restorative movement, breathwork and sustainable lifestyle changes, I gradually began to recover.

My sleep improved dramatically. My dizziness settled. My postural hypotension almost completely resolved. My energy returned. Most importantly, I felt like myself again.

That journey transformed not only my health but also the way I practise.

Today, I combine my clinical knowledge as a Registered Nurse with an integrative, evidence-informed approach that looks at the whole person.

I work with people experiencing burnout, chronic stress, nervous system dysregulation, persistent fatigue and overwhelm. Together we explore the factors that may be contributing to how they feel, including nutrition, lifestyle, stress, sleep and the body's natural biochemistry.

My goal isn't simply to help people manage symptoms. It's to help them understand their bodies, support recovery, and restore health from the foundations up.

If you'd told me a few years ago that one of the hardest seasons of my life would become the reason I now help others heal, I wouldn't have believed you.

Looking back, I can see that my own journey gave me something no textbook ever could—an understanding of what it feels like when your body has simply had enough.

Today, I don't just bring my nursing knowledge to my clients; I bring compassion, lived experience and the reassurance that recovery is possible.

If you're constantly exhausted, overwhelmed or feel as though your body has forgotten how to relax, please know this:

You don't have to accept feeling this way forever.

With the right support, many people can improve their energy, resilience and quality of life. Healing rarely happens overnight, but it is possible. And you don't have to walk the journey alone.
